Continue to Pray for the Family of Officer Richard M. Francis

Today we remember one of our own.  Taken from his family, friends and colleagues too soon. His sacrifice can't be truly measured.  His life is irreplaceable.  We are saddened.  We are angry.  But we are strong.

Despite this ever-growing climate of violence, this culture of non-compliance, we remain committed to our safety and the safety of our families, our co-workers and the innocent citizens of this city.

Our prayers are with the family of Officer Richard M. Francis.  Now and ALWAYS.

May His angels give you comfort and peace in this time of sorrow.

Those who knew him and loved him truly understand the depth of pain that his loss brings.

Those of us who do the job everyday with honor understand the magnitude of his sacrifice.  May God continue to watch over us all.

Richard Francis, you are a hero.  We mourn your loss.  As you take your place among the angels, we ask you to whisper in the ear of the Creator--ask Him to continue to watch over us who must remain here, as we continue to do the job that you did so well.

God bless you.

Alert Officers Capture Dangerous Sex Offender

SALUTE

Area 1 Detective Division Salutes 8th District Police Officers: P.O. G. Cortes, P.O. K. Richards, P.O. D. Falardeau and P.O. J. Torres

On 26 Apr. 08, a female victim had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted inside her vehicle at 2540 W. 80th Pl. The offender drove to a gas station at 79th & Western where he got out to make a purchase. The victim got behind the steering wheel and drove away while calling 911. The offender flagged down a car and followed the victim to the area of 79th & Kedzie, where he approached the victim again.

The victim exited her vehicle and fled on foot, eventually flagging down a woman who drove the victim to safety. These officers spoke with the victim and were able to obtain enough information about the offender to immediately make an arrest. In the investigation that followed, the offender eventually admitted to having sexual contact with the victim.

Due to these officers' quick response, professionalism, and dedication to duty, an extremely dangerous convicted felon was removed from the streets.

VOLUME 8       17 June 2008            NUMBER 7

                       JOB WELL DONE!

I want to personally thank every member of the Department for a job well done tackling some very challenging weekends of violence. The Department’s goals and achievements in fighting crime would not be possible without your daily commitment and your willingness to strengthen our ongoing efforts to reduce crime.

Over this past weekend, Officer involved shootings in both Areas 1 and 2 illustrate that police work is a tough job and the dangers are uncertain and unpredictable. The Puerto Rican Day Festival also exhausted many of our resources, but with your hard work, the event ended without incident. Area 2 Detectives relentlessly investigated and solved the recent quintuple homicide, and the Marine Unit saved two lives during a capsized boat and drowning rescue. All of these incidents were handled with tireless skill and courage. More importantly, no officer safety was compromised and officers arrived home safely.

We ended the month of May with a 2.2 percent increase in overall crime, which included a 12.7 percent increase in murders. Many of the districts showed significant decreases in all crime categories, but more needs to be done to decrease the number of shootings in every district.

Even with the increase, we still made progress and improved compared to last month. With so many of the shootings occurring in some of our most challenged Districts, your efforts to protect each other and the communities you serve did not go unnoticed, and you should be recognized for your dedication and service.

Everyday, police officers across the City are doing a great job pursuing gangs, guns and drugs. I encourage you to continue to perform good, aggressive police work. It will be my priority to ensure that you have the necessary tools and training - but above all - the moral support, needed to assist you in your crime fighting efforts. You have my word and I am committed to making it happen.

Keep up the good work, stay focused on the mission, and always be safe.

Jody P. Weis
